All I can say is wow! Some of those Social Media Services I had never even heard of. I can see why bigger libraries hire staff just to develope and maitain these sites. As I said before, small libraries have a big job of finding one or two that works for them and their patrons and do it well.
Right now I am using Facebook as an outreach to the community. I try to keep it updated two to three times a week, although I have noticed a dip in those who interact and the number of people who have seen it. I'm always trying new ways to interest my audience but I think alot of people are burnt out on Facebook. It might be interesting to try a Teen page and a regular page to seperate the young adult audience and make them feel special.
I also liked using pinterest for the library. I saw a lot of neat stuff to do with that. I loved shelfari and have set up a personal account. I am in the process of making a library account and thought I could use it to announce new books we get into the library but I haven't made it public yet as I am still figuring out how to utalize it the best and use it as advertising for the library.
Social Media Class
Wednesday, January 8, 2014
I typed in Library and Instagram and came up with a few links to libraries who are using this service.
The first library I looked up was web.stagram.com/n/queenslibrary , which I'm not sure is exactly like instagram since it says webstagram but I felt it was the same concept. It looks like they use it to post events and solicit responses from patrons from posing questions asking their opinion. This si very similar to how I use Facebook for the Bison Public Library.
The second library used it a little more similarly to what we saw in class. It had some very "artsy" pictures that were either very close up or just interesting to look at. One thing I liked was a picture of a mad libs page for A Little Women's excerpt, people commented their suggestions and later they posted a picture of the completed story. How fun! Their link is instagram.com/nypl.
The third library actually used instagram to have people submit photos of their library to enter a contest. It was a newly opened library and not only was it a great way to get people in to take photos for publicity but also gave a fresh perspective of how different eyes are drawn to different things. This link was news.lib.ncsu.edu/tag/instagram.
Again very interesting, and while I would like to use all of these social media ideas, it is important for a single staffed library to focus on 1 or 2 and do them well as opposed to doing too many and not keeping up with the maintenance.

The Library Minute: The Amazing Get It @ ASU Button
I typed in Library tutorials and came up with a link to a very cute segment called Library Minute:tutorials. This was a one minute demonstration on how to locate tutorials for their library on how to's for lots of stuff, like research. I viewed a few more and found them to be everything you want in a video, helpful, concise, easy to understand and the humor and references to pop culture don't hurt. Although if you know me, you know how painful this positive review is for me, this is done through the arch enemy of my ALMA MATA, the U of A Wildcats. I hope to search and find an equally, if not better, example of video tutorials on YouTube. BEARDOWN WILDCATS!

Week 2 Pintest
Before I start my assignment, I just want to say I can't believe you are forcing us to take up an addictive behavior. Please apologize to my work, family and friends because I don't see a whole lot getting done now that I have an account on pinterest. I hope you are happy.
1. New York Public Library
http://pinterest.com/nypl
When my library grows up. . .this is what it wants to be. I really liked the science link. I am hoping to start a weekly science club, doing a couple experiments with the kids, and this would be a great way for kids who can't stay in town to follow along, or for kids to encourage parents to do it at home with them.
I also liked the "what are you reading?" link. It looks like it is interactive with followers but I also saw some postings for other libraries as well.
There was so much to enjoy I almost felt a bit overwhelmed in all they have to offer, but with it supporting so many users I bet they have a variety of interests to appeal to. I like how the personality of the writer were coming through. In the "literary greats" link the writer was talking about Stan Lee's 90th bithday and his connection to the library. This author used, what I assume, where several made up words but I could totally hear the voice characteristic of this person whom I have no idea. I think it is important to sound "real" in any social media you use so as not to sound like a robot voice.
2. Westerville Library
http://pinterest.com/westervlibrary
Once again . . .wow! I am salivating from all the possible ideas that are forming. I really like the links that are interactive with patrons. This Library listed "inspired by" titles of popular books and it looks like followers pin images of things that remind them of the book. I looked at the Night Circus, Hunger Games and the Inspired by contest where the pinners came up with their own book and pinned images of what inspred them.
I also loved their tweens/teens library love. I am always trying to get new teens into our library. Since we just opened officially two years ago, they are still not used to having a library or knowing what to do with it. This link was so fun I wanted to be a teen and do some of these things. I have always wanted to learn how to dance the thriller dance.
I guess the biggest drawback is choosing what is good for our library and prioritizing a few main ideas and do them really well. So far I am using facebook but I really can see the potential of having a pinterest account for your library. The goal is to get people in and interested and keep them coming.

Week 1
Question of the week:What are four kinds of things libraries are doing with Facebook?
Start a new post on your blog to complete this assignment.
1. Look at some library Facebook pages and give examples.
Wow! Libraries are using there facebook pages to really connect with their patrons. Not only are they lng library events and book features but posting facts about community history, newletters, inspirational messages regarding reading and libraries but fun puzzles and riddles. My library is only open 20 hours a week and I try to post on our page at least twice a week. I have used our page to do a "word of the day" to help high schoolers improve vocabular for ACT prep. I aslo used it to keep the kids involved in our summer reading program up to date on our mascot gnome's travel to the west coast. Tere are so many ideas I can't wait to "borrow" them.
